Course Description:Functions and graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions. The emphasis is on topics and concepts that are needed in mathematics, science, or business. Applications play a central role and lead to graphing, data analysis, and modeling. Three hours credit.

Prerequisites:Based on placement test or permission.

Course Materials:

  1. Stewart, Redlin, and Watson; Precalculus, Mathematics for Calculus; 5th edition; Thompson/Brooks/Cole, 2007.
  2. A TI – 89 calculator is required
Course Objectives: After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
  1. To review the real nos., equations and the coordinate plane and how these ideas work together to solve problems and model real world situations.
  2. To study and apply the basic concept of a function.
  3. To become familiar with and use polynomial, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions in creating mathematical models.
  4. To become proficient in all these concepts in preparation for study in calculus and/or science courses
Outline of Course Content:
  1. Fundamentals of Algebra
  2. Functions
  3. Polynomial and Rational Functions
  4. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  5. Trigonometric Functions
  6. Analytic Trigonometry
Course Policy:
  1. Attendance: Attendance will be taken daily at the beginning of class. You are expected to be present in every class meeting. If absent from class, you are responsible for all lectures, in-class exercises, assignments, and handouts. Caution: Being absent from class does not change the due date of assignments.
  2. Grades: Your final grade will be determined as follows:

    1. Sept. 16
    2. Oct. 14
    3. Nov. 18
    4. Dec. 17 (8:30-11:30AM)
  4. Make-Up test will not be given. No make-up test will be given unless arrangements have been made prior to the day of the test. If you miss a test your final grade will be used in place of the missed grade. This means the percentage of the final exam will increase. If you miss the final exam, you will receive an F for the course.
  5. Homework: At the end of each section of the text, a collection of problems will be assigned at each class meeting. You will not succeed in this course if you do not diligently do these problems. To monitor your homework activity, 10–15 Webassigns will be assigned and will count toward your final grade.
  6. Cheating Policy: Don't Cheat! There will be no second chances. If you are caught cheating, you will receive an F for that test or assignment.
  7. Classroom etiquette:
